Bislama

1-Try to figure this out before peeking at the translation in #2.
2-How's your Bislama?

One of the fascinating aspects of Vanuatu is that there are so many languages spoken. The official languages are French, English, and Bislama (a form of pidgin English). There are also hundreds of local languages and dialects spoken which may differ considerably from village to village.

It was interesting to hear some local opinions about Bislama. One man in particular felt it is insulting to speak it because it is such a watered down, simplified language. It does serve a purpose, however. Since you can never tell what language someone speaks as their mother tongue (French, English, a local dialect or other) Bislama is a way for the ni-Vanuatuans to communicate en masse. It was fun to decipher some of it in written and verbal form. Here's an example. See if you can figure out the gist in the first photo before looking at the English translation.
